Memorial day is a time of remembrance but can also be downtime to enjoy with friends and family.  If either or both of those is scarce, come to your community garden and make your own.  Carlos (bbq chef extraordinaire) does great burgers, brats and dogs as well as portabellas and corn on the cob.  On…

Sorry it’s been so long since there’s been an update!  Been a busy couple of months. Cool season at the garden is my favorite garden time.  Mosquitoes and ants are minimal and it is not as uncomfortable.  Some winter crops have been started already.  Kale, arugula, mustard, lettuce, spinach, radishes, beets, onions, carrots, kohlrabi, broccoli,…

The July meeting was light on business and heavier on fun.      Carlos grilled burgers, hot dogs, brats, and portabellas.  A beautiful yellow watermelon, cucumber salad and chimichurri sauce came from the garden.  George’s home made ice cream, a peanut butter and fudge cake as well as coca cola cake were some…

The heat of the summer is upon us.  If not for the crew of the community garden (and their near constant watering), all plants would be lost.  Due to their hard work Joe says he has never seen it grow so well.  Pam’s working on getting the parts for the irrigation system.  Hopefully we’ll get…

One saturday i gave a visitor a quick tour of the garden and later realized that everybody doesn’t know a few things. We make our own excellent compost, in addition to compost now’s contribution to the garden.  Coffee grinds and leaves are picked up by hardworking members.  Table scraps (minus meat products or oils) are…

Garner Grows is not a farm in a field with rows of the same crop for a maximum profit.  We are a nonprofit urban community garden who want to grow a variety of fresh and unusual produce in season and we aspire to be welcoming from the road thanks to a lovely flower border.  We…

Spring has arrived and the garden shows it!  There is an abundance of luscious greens and blooming beauties all around.   This last Saturday, 4/14/18, was the most productive combo fundraiser to date.  Nearly all members were able to contribute either time or donations or both.  That trend predicts a good harvest for the year. A…

It was a beautiful and productive day for our garden community. All of the leaders welcomed new member Kelly with a tour.  Many of us worked on extending the compost bin that is made from salvaged cement blocks (thanks Pam!).  Bhavana sprayed fertilizer on seedlings which will happily gobble it up.  Tammy and Kelly inventoried…

Only the bravest, hardiest gardeners came today.  It was around 40* at 10:00 and windy.  Unfortunately the wind was too strong for a warming fire.  To keep warm Maggie, Pam, George, William and I mulched the blackberry area and put compost in rows where future beans, okra, tomatoes, peppers and cut flowers are expected. Pam, Carlos…
