This will be our first time doing a flower arranging workshop, but it has been on our to-do list for a while! Now that our cut-flower garden is flourishing, we can finally do it. Fresh flowers, greenery and clear, glass jars will be provided, or you can bring your own decorative vases. Two of our leaders are particularly fond of miniature arrangements so if you are in the “tiny is cute” camp, feel free to bring mini vases instead! The class will be instructed by 3 of our leaders, each with years of experience in the art of flower arranging, and countless awards won at the NC State Fair Flower & Garden Show. There will be a short discussion on the basics of flower arranging and then they will walk around and offer advice and guidance to who anyone who wants it.
Below you will see a short bio for each leader, and some examples of their arrangements to get a feel for their styles.

Tammy
Tammy has been sticking flowers in vases since she was a kid. Participating in the NC State Fair for 20 years has honed her design skills and pushed her creativity. Though told she has a recognizable style by many, she really can’t define it herself. She especially enjoys doing the miniature arrangements.

Layla
Layla combines their love of plants with their artistic inclination to piece together flower arrangements. This year will be their 7th year putting their creativity to the test in the NC State Fair competitions. They would describe their style as being fully based on inspiration and intuition. They enjoy playing with flowers and they hope to spread that joy, so that others can have fun with plants too!

Maggie
Maggie is the owner of Jelly Fresh Flowers, and her arrangements are a source of joy for many in her community. She has a strong sense of color use, and a classic approach to flower arranging. She is knowledgeable about what plants have a decent vase-life, and how to grow a beautiful dahlia. All dahlias at the event will be courtesy of Jelly Fresh Flowers.
Equipment needed:
- Gloves/Sleeves – Many of the flowers and plants can have thorns or be otherwise scratchy and irritate the skin. If you are sensitive to these things, please come prepared with these protective clothing items.
- Tools – We will have pruning shears available, but supplies are limited, and depending on the size of the class we may have to share. If you have your own, feel free to bring them, just be sure to tape your name on them.
- Shoes – The workshop will take place in our community garden, which has rough terrain and can get muddy if it has rained recently. Wear appropriate shoes.
- Vases – We will be providing simple jars to create your bouquets, but if you have a more decorative one you would like to bring, feel free; just keep it small so there will be enough flowers to go around for everyone! Think something along the lines of a 1 quart mason jar or smaller. If you are bringing miniature, vases, you may have 2 or 3 depending on size.
