We made great progress and, more importantly, had lots of fun at the garden today. Six of our sixteen members/almost members, plus a few children, showed up to give a hand. Thanks for the help, kids. We got strawberry plants, onions, and cabbages planted.
On Tuesday, we’ll be planting potatoes (I will remember to bring a knife this time!), more onions, lettuce, spinach, collards, bok choy, kale, kohl rabi, and peas. My job between now and then is to research how much room each of these vegetables need, i.e. how far apart to plant them. Join us Tuesday from 5-7pm to test my knowledge.
I’m happy when I’m gardening. How about you?
Well, you all missed it! Not your fault though, since we had to do it on Sunday instead of Saturday. Take a look as you drive by. It’s wonderful to see it changing.
At this moment, our landscape and design guru is finishing up three beds, to which we will need to add compost and shape into mounds on Tuesday. Anyone who can make it out Tuesday at 5pm, I beg you to come. We’ll have some tools there, but if you bring a shovel, rake or hoe, that’d be great.
We’re inviting the paper out for next Saturday’s workday from 10am-2pm, which we’ll call our first seed day and the pictures will look better if we have lots of people.
As usual, if you have questions, email or call me.
Happy groundbreaking!

It’s been pointed out to me that I’ve posted our schedule and invited people to join us for our first workdays, but I haven’t said where the garden is located!
We have one acre of land on hwy. 70 directly opposite Locked and Loaded in the Kroger shopping center.
Here’s some pictures:
Here are the upcoming events for Garner Grows:
- Tuesday, March 16 at 5pm: Workday
The sweet gum pods that carpet the field need to be raked. Bring a leaf rake – or two if you have extra. I’ve noticed children like to rake : )
- Saturday, March 20, 10pm – 2pm: Workday
Groundbreaking! The field will be tilled starting at 10. We can use 4-5 people to help from 10 – noon, then more from noon – 2 to start mounding the beds and mixing in compost.
- Saturday, April 17, time TBD: Booth at White Deer Park
The Town of Garner is hosting an Earth Day Celebration including Big Sweep and Litter Sweep activities, composting programs, children’s craft activities, educational displays, bluebird walks and more. We will have a booth – a great opportunity for recruiting new members. Come out and “get your green on”!
- Saturday, April 24, 2pm-4pm: Community Information Meeting
We are partnering with Southeast Regional Library for this event, as they pull together a collection of gardening books for one of their display tables. Please come and share your comments, concerns, and suggestions.
